The Trinity College women's soccer team defeated the Tufts University Jumbos 2-1 Saturday, Oct. 25. The Bantams earned their fifth straight victory, improving to 9-4 overall, and 4-4 in the NESCAC. The victory clinched a NESCAC Tournament bid. The Jumbos, who fell to 7-5 overall, are now tied with Trinity in the NESCAC standings.
The Bantams quickly scored their first goal four minutes into the first period. Senior Erika Maciaszczyk delivered a perfect cross pass from the left sideline to find Jenny Ley '12, who was able to place the ball in the right hand corner, just behind the goalie. Kristen Ramsay '12, Shawna Altdorf '12, and Caitlin Prendergast '10 substituted in to keep the intensity high.
The score remained 1-0, as neither team was able to score until the second period. Sophomore goalkeeper Emily Weedon saved five balls in the first half and five in the second. Tufts' goalie Hannah Jacobs '11 finished with four saves overall.
The two teams battled ferociously as the score remained stagnant. It wasn't until the sixty-fifth minute that Tufts junior Ali Maxwell launched a ball in the upper left hand side of the goal passed Weedon. Teammate Whitney Hardy '10 picked up the assist, as Tufts tied the game, 1-1.
With thirteen minutes left in the game, overtime seemed inevitable until Caroline Washburne '11 passed the ball in the upper right side of the goal to Prendergast, who made a spectacular header to put the Bantams up 2-1. "She just kicked a great ball; I didn't even realize it went in until my teammates were helping me off the field" said Prendergast. "Although we didn't perform to the best of our team's capabilities, we definitely toughed out a competitive game by matching their intensity to pull out an important conference win."
The Bantams will celebrate their "Senior Day" when they play Amherst College at home this Friday, Oct. 31. This game is incredibly important because it is their last NESCAC game of the regular season. Riding the momentum of their current winning streak, Trinity can earn home-field advantage in the first round of the NESCAC Tournament. Sunday, Nov. 2, will be the first round of the playoffs, with the opponent and time to be announced later.
